Yoga therapy is an adjunct healing modality that may provide practical support, relaxation, self-awareness, and stress reduction for clients of varied backgrounds and conditions.

At Total Health & Wellness Associates, PLLC, yoga therapy is offered within a clinical, whole-person care environment. While yoga therapists do not diagnose or treat, they provide clients with practices that can help create greater balance in the body, the mind, and the breath.

Yoga therapy invites the client to actively listen, observe, and participate in the process of self-discovery. Tools learned in session are intended to support daily life, helping clients cultivate stability, composure, restfulness, strength, and greater awareness.

A yoga therapy session in a clinical environment may look different than a class at a local yoga studio. Sessions may take place in a therapy room with a chair for the client and a chair for the therapist. Yoga mats and props may be used, but they are not required for a beneficial session.

The focus is not on performance, flexibility, or doing postures perfectly. Instead, yoga therapy supports guided self-study through movement, breath, mindfulness, and thoughtful discussion.

Balancing the Body

Traditional yoga postures may be adapted for different fitness levels, needs, and physical conditions. Less traditional practices may also be used, such as focused writing, walking, and artistic expression.

Understanding the Mind

Meditation, guided relaxation, body scans, and other mindfulness practices may be used to sharpen skills of observation. Clients are supported in learning how to better understand the mind and how to use it as a tool rather than feeling controlled by it.

Using the Breath

Breathing practices such as diaphragmatic breath, counted breaths, alternate nostril breath, breath retention, ujjayi breath, and others may be used to support relaxation, centeredness, and a greater sense of internal stability.

The ability to observe and work with the breath can help clients develop more awareness of the connection between mental, emotional, and physical states.

Remote yoga therapy may be available for clients who prefer or need a more flexible format. Sessions may take place through secure video meetings and can include discussion of the client’s current concerns, mindset, physical condition, breath awareness, and practice goals.

Yoga therapy may be helpful for clients seeking additional support for stress reduction, self-awareness, mind-body balance, and whole-person wellness. Contact our team to learn more about yoga therapy availability, provider options, and whether this service may be a good fit for your needs.
